Welcome to Class 6
Welcome to your child’s final year at Lakefield, and what an exciting year we have ahead! Our first topic is Rumble In The Jungle, a geography based topic that will enable children in Years 5 and 6 the opportunity to explore the rich and diverse rainforests of the world. They will learn about physical and human processes such as deforestation and explain how these can cause changes in places and environments. Children will look at artists such as Henri Rousseau who have used, and been inspired by rainforests in their artwork.
Other topics this year include:
The ancient Maya civilisation is a fascinating topic for the children to learn. From looking at who the ancient Maya people were and where and when they lived, by using maps and atlases to locate Maya cities and identify countries in Mesoamerica, to learning about the religious beliefs and gods of the ancient Maya people. There will be opportunity for children to explore the Maya number system. We will look at explorers such as John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood and learn about the types of food eaten by the ancient Maya people, finding out about the significance of corn and chocolate.
Frampton Over The Years
A short unit, which will give the children the opportunity to explore the history of Frampton-On-Severn. They will look at historic buildings and the history behind the places they see in their daily life as they move around the village. There will be an art based focus within the topic which will allow children to draw places of historical interest in Frampton-On-Severn.
Location, Location, Location – A contrasting locality.
Linking in to the previous unit, children will conduct a study of Bude, Cornwall prior to their residential trip. They will look at the similarities and differences between Bude and Frampton-On-Severn by focussing on what the landscape is like in both areas and how human activity is changing it. They will use digital mapping to map the route from Frampton-On-Severn to Bude.
Our PE days are on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has their swimming kit with them on Fridays in Autumn term one.
English or topic based homework is given out on Mondays and Maths on Wednesdays. The children will normally be given a week to complete their homework unless an extended homework is issued.
Spellings are given out on a Monday and are to be completed on a daily basis. They are due in on Fridays prior to the weekly spelling test.
