Promoting traditional British Values
The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, in their document of 2013 and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister. At Lakefield these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
Democracy:
- All pupils have the opportunity to become a school councillor
- All year 6 pupils have the opportunity to become a prefect
- All pupils vote for their class representative on the school council, the Eco council and their house captains
- Pupils have the opportunity to express their views through the questionnaire, pupil surveys and PSHE
- Children take part in debates such as the Dragons’ Den and the regional debate relating to personal expression and pupil voice
- Promotion of fairness and justice as a Christian value
- Choice of rewards e.g. golden time activities
The Rule of Law:
- Children are expected to live by the Golden Rule
- Pupils are expected to keep class and school rules that aim to keep children safe, maintain good order that enables learning to take place, and to be fair
- We arrange visits from the local Police in order for the children to understand the importance of keeping the law and education about their responsibilities at different ages
- We arrange visits from SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) to talk to the children about keeping the laws of the river in order to keep safe
- We arrange cycling proficiency for the children in order for them to understand the rules of the road
- Developing an understanding of the role of parliament and knowledge of local MP
- We ensure that when the children take part in sport they play fairly and by the rules of the game including listening and acting on information from the game/sport officials
Liberty:
- Using the whole school values of: Respect, Trust, Truthfulness, Perseverance, Courage, Friendship and Forgiveness
- Listening to the children and their ideas for school improvement
- School Council
- The opportunity to initiate ideas including raising money for charities
- The opportunity to express preferences and give opinions
- Promoting the consideration of the rights of others
- Learning about War and the British Empire and Commonwealth
Respect for others:
- Using the whole school values of: Respect, Trust, Truthfulness, Perseverance, Courage, Friendship and Forgiveness
- Keeping the Golden Rules
- Promotion of Christian Values through Religious Education, CPHSE and Collective Worship
- Anti-bullying policy and procedures
- Equality policy and practice
- Sporting behaviour in competitions
- Inter-house competitions
- Open-the-Book
- Regular use of talking partners
- Inclusion of all regardless of ability or origins
- Promotion of good manners
- Modelling by adults
- Accepting and celebrating different beliefs and opinions
Tolerance for those different faiths and beliefs:
- Using the whole school values of: Respect, Trust, Truthfulness, Perseverance, Courage, Friendship and Forgiveness
- The teaching of RE
- Acts of worship
- Assemblies reflecting the beliefs of others
- Visitors from other cultures/ beliefs
- Rights of parents to withdraw pupils from RE and /or worship
- Open the Book worship and prayers
- Development of ecumenical links
- Promotion of idea that everyone is special and equal
Promotion of Britishness
- Supporting Britain and British sports players in events such as the Olympics, the World Cup, Commonwealth games etc.
- Commemoration of key political/historical dates such as Guy Fawkes Night, Armistice etc.
- Learning traditional British hymns
- Showing respect for the monarchy
- Looking at the flags of Great Britain
- Studying the History of British events and the monarchy
